Oh, these are what teabaggers are.

A group of emotionally unintelligent people, who still cant get over the fact that their president is a black man, that are selective about the information they receive *cough, cough* Fox News and are simply willfully ignorant racists.

Frankly speaking, (like I havent been frank already) they all really need to sit down and take their asses home right now!

Aunt Jemima is a mammy?

So, I spend the majority of my time in Ithaca, NY because I attend Ithaca College here. Being that I am a journalism student I am expected to keep up with local media outlets. I read the Ithaca Journal from time to time and this week’s article grabbed my attention, Fraudulent Web deal leaves woman in debt. It is about a local woman who was duped out of $1,900 when she tried to sell her “collection” online.

A few days have passed since I’ve read this article, and I still feel off about it. Let me just put it out there. I have NO sympathy for this woman. AT ALL! (Victim my ass!)

The article says:

[Suzi] Gardiner’s troubles started after she decided to sell her collection of Aunt Jemima figures on an Internet site to pay a few bills before she went back to her job at BOCES working with developmentally disabled children.

Gardiner says in the article, “All I wanted to do was get my car inspected and have a little extra money before I go back to work.” “This has been an experience that has cost me deeply, both financially and emotionally.”

I understand that this is a recession and times are tough all around…BUT…

Why on Earth does this woman white woman have a “collection” of mammy dolls?!!!

I can tell you why! That’s because she is a However, I will just leave it to your imagination.

I don’t know about you all but seeing this article has made me question whether or not I can continue to consume Aunt Jemima products. (Those pancake mixes are so good!)

Just look at the history of Aunt Jemima and other mammy’s throughout the United States history.

“Fair” and Handsome?

I am still shocked by how “whiteness” is not an issue in the United States. It seems that race doesn’t matter in the U.S., as long as you’re white. It makes sense. It is normal for those with power to be blind to the multiple ways they wield it, profit by it, and fight to keep it. When I hear my white classmates speak about race and their “blindness” to it growing up is something I cannot relate to. However, if the position were reversed, blacks would be just as oblivious to it I feel, but that fact remains that it is not. Racism, largely, negatively affects people of color because they are the ones without power in this society.

There is this global ideology that “white is right,” and it is subtly and bluntly reinforced daily. Here I have an example of one the blatant examples.

Below is a video segment I found on CNN about India’s growing market in skin whitening creams. The message is: “Get white skin and life will be better.”
